SSV/UTV Import from China: What Dealers Need to Know

A practical guide to importing side-by-side vehicles from China: drivetrain specs that matter, EPA certification, PDI checklist, and how to evaluate SSV manufacturers.

SSVs are growing — and China is paying attention

Side-by-side vehicles — SSVs, UTVs, whatever your market calls them — have become one of the fastest-growing segments in powersports. Dealers are watching customers who used to buy ATVs now asking about SSVs. The Chinese manufacturing sector has noticed, and the last five years have brought real improvements in build quality and specs.

But the Chinese SSV market is uneven. Some factories produce machines that hold their own against mid-tier Japanese brands. Others assemble vehicles that won’t pass EPA certification and won’t survive a season of actual work. Knowing the difference matters.

What to look for in a Chinese SSV

Most importers fixate on horsepower and price. Those numbers sell SSVs on the showroom floor, but they’re not what keeps customers happy six months later. Here’s what actually matters:

Drivetrain: 2WD/4WD with a real locking differential

If your customers are buying SSVs for work — farming, hunting, ranch use — on-demand 4WD with a locking rear differential isn’t optional. It’s the difference between getting home and getting stuck. Verify that the differential actually locks, not just that the spec sheet says it does.

EPS: not a luxury at this size

Drive an SSV for four hours on a trail without electric power steering and you’ll understand why EPS belongs in the “standard equipment” column for anything in the 800cc+ class. If a manufacturer is still treating it as an optional upgrade at this displacement, that tells you something about where they’re cutting costs.

Cargo capacity

An SSV without a functional cargo bed isn’t an SSV — it’s a golf cart with aggressive bodywork. Check the payload rating and bed capacity. A proper utility SSV should handle at least 300 kg in the bed.

Engine architecture: V-Twin for the big class

In the 800cc–1000cc class, V-Twin engines deliver smoother power, better low-end torque, and they sound like a proper SSV. Single-cylinder engines in this displacement range tend to vibrate excessively at sustained RPM.

CJMOTO’s SSV: one model, done right

Let’s be direct: CJMOTO’s SSV 1000cc EPS 4-Seater is their only side-by-side. They’re not pretending to offer a full SSV lineup across multiple engine sizes. What they do offer is a 976cc V-Twin EFI with selectable 2WD/4WD, locking differential, EPS, and a rear cargo box — positioned for the utility buyer who needs one serious machine, not a catalog of options.

If your market requires both a 500cc and a 1000cc UTV from the same supplier, you’ll need to work with multiple factories. CJMOTO’s focus is the 1000cc class, and they’re upfront about that. That honesty matters — it’s better than a supplier who claims to have a complete lineup and can’t deliver. For dealers who also stock ATVs, CJMOTO’s ATV range pairs naturally with the SSV — shared manufacturer, shared parts logistics, one point of contact.

The import process for SSVs

  • Sample first — even for SSVs. Yes, air-freighting one SSV is expensive. It’s cheaper than a container of machines where the differential lock doesn’t engage and the EPS stutters under load. Test cold starts, EPS behavior, cargo latch durability, and differential function on a real unit before you commit.
  • Certification. For the U.S. market: EPA certification for non-road engines. For California: CARB. For Europe: CE. Verify that the certificate covers the exact model you’re ordering — not a similar-looking unit with a different VIN.
  • Container math. A 20-foot container fits 4–6 SSVs depending on crating. Shipping to the U.S. West Coast: budget ,000–,000.
  • PDI is not optional. SSVs arrive partially assembled. Check lug nut torque (this is where most problems start), fluid levels, differential lock function, EPS calibration, and brake performance. Thirty minutes per unit saves you a season of phone calls.

Parts and warranty: ask before, not after

An SSV has more wear items than an ATV — axles, differential components, cargo bed latches, seat brackets. If you can’t get a replacement CV joint boot in under two weeks, your customer won’t be happy. Before committing, ask about parts fulfillment time and warranty claim process. “We handle warranty via parts replacement” is a workable answer. “Ship the broken part back to China for evaluation” is not.

CJMOTO maintains parts documentation for their SSV 1000cc alongside their ATV lineup. This is the kind of operational detail that separates factories that understand powersports from ones that just ship metal.

Who should read this

This guide is for powersports dealers adding SSVs to their product line, importers evaluating Chinese SSV manufacturers, and distributors in markets where name-brand side-by-sides are priced beyond what most buyers can justify.

If you’re evaluating CJMOTO specifically, the SSV 1000cc EPS 4-Seater page has the full spec sheet. One model, 976cc V-Twin, 4-seater. If you also need a smaller UTV in the 500cc class, you’ll need a second supplier — and that’s fine. Better to build relationships with two specialists than one generalist who can’t deliver either. Check CJMOTO’s full product catalog to see how the SSV fits alongside their ATV, golf cart, and motorcycle lines.
